This Thursday, the automaker is hoping for a repeat with a new commercial starring a long-deceased writer and a nearly 100-year-old poem.
The writer is Edgar Albert Guest, a former poet laureate of the state of Michigan who died in 1959. The poem is "See It Through", which Guest wrote in 1917. While "See It Through" may not be the most memorable three stanzas in the history of English literature, its message of determination and drive is a good match for the Detroit-as-underdog theme underpinning Chrysler's "Imported from Detroit" campaign. Backed by the Muddy Waters tune "Mannish Boy", the commercial has an undeniable appeal.
Will it work?
After Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy in 2009, the company's marketing arm took a lot of heat for producing feel-good branding pieces, like the very strange one dedicated to Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Dealers were perhaps the most vocal critics, clamoring for product-focused ads that talked about specific models people could buy.
While Chrysler's made great strides on that front as far as Dodge, Jeep, and even Fiat are concerned, this spot seems so focused on Detroit and the people who live there that the Chrysler 300 kind of gets lost in the shuffle. That doesn't make it a bad ad -- in fact, it's hugely memorable compared to most of the car commercials on TV -- but it may not be quite what dealers want.

Chrysler earned a net income of $212 million during the third quarter of 2011. That figure marks a significant improvement over the same period last year, when the company posted a net loss of $84 million. Chrysler notes that its modified operating profit more than doubled compared to the third quarter of last year. The automaker posted a modified operating profit of $483 million for Q3 2011 compared to $239 million in Q3 2010. Chrysler sites an increased demand for the company's multiple refreshed products as well as increased sales volume, better pricing and more advertising as the reason for the improvements.

Looking for evidence that Chrysler is hard at work on a hot-rod version of the flagship 300C? Here’s the smoking gun.
Spy shooters have captured the 300C SRT8 with no camouflage, and details are overwhelming that this is the halo four-door for Chrysler. The test car even has SRT8 badges on the steering wheel and the tachometer.
There also are wheels that look like six-spoke SRT rollers, Brembo brakes and chrome dual exhaust.
Look for the 6.4-liter Hemi V8 in the Charger SRT8 to be used in the 300 sibling. The Dodge is rated at 465 hp and 465 lb-ft, so look for similar output in the Chrysler. Other carryover features likely will include the elaborate 8.4-inch touch screen in the middle and paddle shifters. Also note the heavily bolstered seats and the leather-wrapped steering wheel. A five-speed automatic will complete the powertrain.
The outside is marked by an angrier front fascia, a car grille and athletic rocker panels. The elegant taillight and headlight styles from the regular car are also present.
Chrysler hasn’t announced its New York auto show plans, but we’d be surprised if this hot rod from the Pentastar doesn’t have a spotlight role. And when Dodge boss Ralph Gilles introduced the Charger SRT8 in Chicago, he punctuated the event by planting a kiss on the front fender.

Since there is little difference between the two years, buyers might want to choose a 2009 over a 2010, in order to get the added protection, if they can.
Shoppers who have casually lusted after a 300 for years, but never committed, might want to note that the car is due for a complete, wheels-up redesign for the 2011 model year. We know little about the next 300, but it may well be a model more suited to the times than this one.

Chrysler Financial Gets $1.5B Loan from Bailout.

WASHINGTON – The Treasury Department said Friday it will provide a $1.5 billion loan to Chrysler LLC's financing arm to be used for new vehicle loans in hopes of boosting sales and ultimately returning the automaker to profitability.

The Treasury said the new aid will be in addition to the $17.4 billion in loans earmarked for both Chrysler and General Motors Corp. last month in an effort to buy time for the two companies to reorganize.

"This funding will better position us to withstand the current economic challenges until funding becomes available through more traditional commercial sources," Thomas F. Gilman, Chrysler Financial's vice chairman and chief executive, said in a statement.

The first $100 million under the loan is expected to be available next week.

The terms require Chrysler to pay interest at a rate 1 percentage point higher than the one-month the London Interbank Offered Rate for the first year, increasing to 1.5 points above LIBOR for the remainder of the five-year term. At Friday's LIBOR, that's an initial rate of about 1.36 percent.

A special purpose entity created by Chrysler Financial will also issue warrants to Treasury in the form of additional notes in an amount equal to 5 percent of the total size of the loan.

Battered Chrysler saw its sales plunge 53 percent last month, far worse than for GM or Ford Motor Co., and analysts have said it probably won't survive the year as an independent company — despite the $4 billion loan it received from the government. Chrysler had been counting on an additional $3 billion in aid for Chrysler Financial.

The government settled on $1.5 billion after consulting with Chrysler Financial in recent weeks and getting an assessment of the company's financial situation, said a government official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the transaction.
Unlike GM and Ford Motor Co., Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler is owned by a private equity firm, Cerberus Capital Management LP, and is not required to publicly disclose details of its finances as public corporations are.
GM's financing arm, GMAC LLC, received $5 billion from the Treasury Department in late December. In addition, the Treasury said it would lend up to $1 billion to GM so that the automaker would be able to buy more equity from GMAC.

COUNCIL BOSSES in Somerset are working on a high-tech solution to stop lorry drivers getting stuck down narrow country lanes while following their sat navs.

Somerset County Council has teamed up with Suffolk County Council to help improve the quality of information presented by SatNav systems.
During a recent meeting at the offices of the Department for Transport in Westminster, the two councils forged a common stance on what information the satellite navigation systems should be providing for HGVs.
The two councils plan to produce a SatNav download containing prefered HGV routes as well as pinpointing the locations of height and weight restricted bridges.
They are also working with various mapping companies on mapping layers specifically designed for HGV routing and piloting a 'truck friendly' SatNav Unit.
Councillor Tony Shire, Somerset County Council's portfolio holder for highways, said: "For some time now Somerset County Council has been working to ensure that HGVs are using the most appropriate routes and not being inadvertently directed onto unsuitable roads or under height restricted bridges.
"I am delighted that our work to address this issue has been highlighted by the Department for Transport, and we look forward to working with Suffolk to further develop methodologies to get critical information regarding the highway infrastructure onto SatNav systems in the future.

Basically, a similar unit to the DB9’s automatic, the Touchtronic 2 is a transaxle ZF transmission which has been upgraded to handle the higher power and torque from the V12 of the DBS. Buttons on the fascia are used to select drive, park and reverse settings, with leather-trimmed magnesium paddles mounted behind the wheel to shift up and down gears. Once a paddle is activated, manual control is selected, with the driver needing to select “Drive” to return to full automatic mode. There is also a “Sport” setting with more aggressive throttle mapping and gear changes.

The 0-100km/h time of 4.3 seconds is unchanged, mainly due to a shortening of the final drive ratio from 3.15:1 to 3.46:1. Top speed of 307km/h is also unchanged.

In addition, the DBS now comes with BeoSound, Bang and Olufsen’s bespoke audio equipment for the DBS. 13 channels, 10 speakers, 1000W - it’s all fitting for Aston Martin.

An optional 2+2 seating configuration will now be offered also, along with new 10-spoke 20-inch wheels with a diamond turned surface, which saves 8kg in unsprung mass.

Pricing on the DBS starts at $497,441 for the manual, and $505,691 for the new Touchtronic 2, excluding on-road costs. Chrysler 300 hid kits.

When fuel prices rise, snake oil salesman start seeping into the market. They often promise everything: fuel economy and performance, in a product that’s good for the environment — all with a low price.

But real green technology takes time, energy and money to develop. You can’t just attach something to a modern car and expect to see results, because vehicles today come so finely tuned and often can already often adapt to different air and fuel qualities.

Improving on what comes from the automaker’s factory is a multi-billion-dollar industry but takes real research and development cash, time, and effort.

From mild to wild, these five areas are the most promising ways to reduce your impact on the environment while in most cases improving performance. Being green doesn’t always have to be a compromise.
Oil. Oil? Are you crazy? What’s oil going to do?
Don’t forget that oil is used to lubricate all of the things inside your engine. Although it’s a fluid, standard-weight oil isn’t often optimized to be as “slippery” as possible to reduce friction. More viscous oil, like a 15W or 20W, is good for protecting the engine but is “thicker” and not optimized for fuel economy.
New oils are being produced with fuel economy in mind, though. For instance, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy oil, with a 0W-20 or 0W-30 rating, reduces drag and friction inside the engine while ensuring everything is protected. They say you’ll be looking at a 2 per cent improvement in fuel economy, which adds up over time in reduced fuel bills.
Oh, and consider a block heater. In winter, it reduces engine stress when starting in the cold. If your engine isn’t working as much to warm up, it means less fuel burned.
The PLX Kiwi.
The Kiwi is sort of in a category by itself, because this plug-and-play device doesn’t change how your car drives, but how you drive.
Apparently some drivers can see improvements of up to 20 per cent, because the Kiwi keeps tabs on your driving efficiency, displayed as your “Kiwi Score.”
The score reflects four aspects: smoothness, drag, acceleration and deceleration. Results at the end of your trip show you how you can on an easy-to-read display so that anyone can improve your driving.
Because it’s plugged in to your vehicle’s diagnostics port, it also keeps track of how much fuel you use, plus how much you spend on x fuel and how much you’ve saved by improving your technique.

With a base price of $38,000, the V8 is expected to secure a place for Hyundai on the wishlists of people shopping the Lexus ES 350, Chrysler 300C, Pontiac G8 and the Cadillac CTS, among others.

"We're aware there's a segment out there that won't consider a luxury vehicle unless it has a V8," said Michael Deitz, manager of product development for Hyundai Motor America. "It's not just about horsepower today, it's about efficiency."

Hyundai has always done a magnificent job in the styling department, borrowing cues from the best in the business. So it was not surprising that Genesis fit the fashion scene of Miami Beach and Coral Gables, where the V8 cruised quietly in a recent demo tour, loaded to the gills with luxury features.

The nicely proportioned body rides on a 115.6 inch wheelbase that is more than 3 inches longer than that of the Lexus GS and more than an inch longer than the Infiniti M's.

The Genesis face is predatory, with a tapered aluminum hood framed by backswept high-intensity headlamps resembling the eyes of a raptor. A trapezoidal grille with winglike vanes accentuates the curvature of the snout above a low-to-the-ground air scoop that represents the predator's mouth.

The aerodynamic roofline flows back onto a short deck and a blunt rear end tightly tucked and decorated with wraparound tail lamps.

To achieve instant credibility in the premium market, Hyundai had to provide more of everything at an unbeatable price: More horsepower than a Lexus GS and Infiniti M, better longitudinal balance than a Lexus ES 350, bigger disc brakes than a Mercedes-Benz E550, better aerodynamics than a BMW 5-Series and Cadillac CTS, and faster acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (5.7 seconds) than the BMW 750i (6 seconds) or the Lexus LX 460 (5.9).

The new Tau V8 has more horsepower per liter than any of its V8 competitors and outperforms all V8 performance sedans with an EPA fuel economy estimate of 17 city miles per gallon and 25 highway, according to Hyundai research.

But where Genesis really exceeds expectations is in its load of standard equipment. A $36,000 Genesis 3.8 with the Premium Package Plus is $8,000 less than a comparably equipped Infiniti M35 and $22,000 less than a comparable BMW 535i.

Standard on the 3.8 models are 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lamps, automatic headlights, dual power heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, leather upholstery with heated power seats, proximity entry with electric push button start, leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel with audio controls, dual automatic climate control, AM/FM/CD stereo with auxiliary input jacks and Bluetooth.

Of course, Chrysler had to sacrifice a significant measure of the donor car's ride comfort. And? The supremely-engined 300C SRT-8 is aimed at G-force junkies and serious stunters.
